Proftpd has a README.LDAP with some explanations of the requirements to use ldap for authentication. Both objectclasses required used by Proftpd, posixAccount and posixGroup are included in ISPMan. For my configuration I simply used the following four directives.
LDAPServer "localhost"
LDAPDoAuth on o=ispman
LDAPAuthBinds on
